The Five Most Stylishly Named US Hair Salons

Hair salons are known for their sometimes witty, sometimes strange names. We’ve picked a few salons that combine great marketing (that’s what a name is after all) with great cuts and a solid reputation. They’re scattered all over the country, from the East Coast to the Midwest so we hope that you can find a hair salon near you.

Seagull – New York

Downtown New York is famous for its clothing boutiques, record shops and locally-loved salons. Seagull hair salon probably has the most music industry cred in downtown New York. It’s co-owned by former member of Le Tigre, Joanna Fateman. Small and niche it might be but it certainly isn’t cheap, with cut prices starting from $90 and $200 if you go with a lead stylist.

Immortal Beloved – Washington DC

As the name suggests, Immortal Beloved in Washington DC deals in a kind of emotive, rock aesthetic. Their stylists come highly recommended and  their colourists are no slouches either, judging by the positive reviews online. The salon itself is highly unusual, with handmade furnishings supplied by the owners and the strange feature of a tree growing out of a claw foot bathtub. The staff are well-regarded for their friendly attitude and attentive, professional approach. Perhaps the best recommendation of all: stylist Johnny Wright cuts First Lady Michelle Obama’s hair.

Ted Gibson – Washington DC

This list wouldn’t be complete without at least one ‘big name’ salon built on a list of high-flying clientele. Owner and lead stylist Ted Gibson appears on US primetime television, overseeing hair makeover on TLC’s ‘What Not to Wear’.  Celebrities whose hair he has Continue reading

My Journey to Manageable Acne

The Basics
Acne is a skin disease that comes from oily skin and clogged pores.  What causes these particular problems can vary. You can get acne from hormone and testosterone fluctuations, from stress, from sweating a lot or just something as simple as not properly and routinely cleaning your face.  According to Dr. Jamie Mackelfresh MD, a dermatologist at Emory University, acne affects 25-40% of men and at least half of adult women, and can have a devastating impact on
acne rosacea
your life. This is because acne can leave your face discolored, with dark spots that could possibly never go away if untreated.  Picking scabs off white heads and black heads or popping pimples can cause discoloration, as well as infection. Furthermore, it can cause pimples to spread to unaffected areas of your face.

My Story
I don’t know why other people pick at their face, but I don’t like the feeling of scabs or the sight of whiteheads on my face.  So, yes I am guilty of once being a picker.  I started haveing acne and other complexion problems when I was 8 years old and unfortunately, it followed me into my adulthood.  If I don’t wash my face every day with some type of acne treatment cream or ointment, I will have a severe breakout that can take more than 2 weeks to get rid of.  I have tried many different kinds of acne creams too. Some worked wonders for me and some made my acne worse.  When I was 8 years old, I went to see a dermatologist, who prescribed me a roll-on medication called cyclobenzaprine. I started to see results after about a month of taking it, but it never really completely cleared up my face.   It was definitely a Continue reading

Summer Health Tips—7 Ways To Get (And Stay!) Healthy & Fit

Summer often has us thinking more about fitness, doesn’t it? The weather is warming up, and getting outside for some exercise sounds pretty good. Not to mention, don’t we all want to look as good as possible at the beach or poolside? Here are 7 things to focus on this summer in order to get and stay healthy and fit.

Stems

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Drinking enough water seems like common sense, but staying hydrated is often overlooked. Most people need more water during warm weather, but sometimes the temperature rises faster than our mind catches up with our bodies’ changing needs.

Make sure that you stay hydrated this summer by carrying a water bottle with you everytime you go out and guzzling often. Pay particularly close attention to water intake when engaging in any physical activity.

Wear Sunscreen

Be sure to wearing sunscreen every day to protect your skin from sun damage. UV rayscan cause melanoma (skin cancer) and premature aging. Plus, sun burns just plain hurt. Protect yourself by using sunblock daily with SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher. Be sure to reapply it often throughout the day, especially if you’re swimming or engaging in physical activity that causes you to sweat it off.

Protect Your Eyes with Sunglasses

Your eyes need protection from the sunlight, too. Sunlight causes damage to the cornea and can be the start of a whole slew of chronic eye diseases – don’t take your eyesfor granted! Choose shades with 100% UV protection. Large frames offer the most protection and Continue reading

Simple Ways To Protect Your Eyes From The Sun

Our eyes are incredibly sensitive organs that react to temperature changes, light changes and the world around us.

When a gust of wind blows around dust from the sidewalk, you may feel a small amount of debris enter your eye. It can be incredibly irritating – and somewhat painful – and you find yourself rubbing your eye, sometimes making it even worse! As this happens, your eye is already working hard to rid it of that tiny dust particle. In doing so, it produces liquid and lubricates your eye in order to effectively wash out the particle right from your eye.

The same applies for when the sun is shining bright on a summer’s day. If you look up in the sky you may feel your eyes start to water – almost as if you’re starting to cry. This is another example of the mechanism your eye goes through in order to protect itself. Bright rays from the sun can seriously damage your eye if you’re exposed to it a great deal, so the fact that the eye waters even if you look up in the sky on a bright day shows us just how sensitive our eyes are; and how good they are at defending themselves.

Help needed

No matter how good our eyes are at trying to protect us, in bright sunshine it is so important that we wear eye protection in the form of sunglasses in order to filter out the sun’s harmful rays.

It’s often thought that if we don’t look straight at the sun then its rays won’t have any effect; but this is a dangerous myth to believe in.
In fact, the sun’s rays are so powerful that even being out in the sunshine can damage our eyes. In extreme cases, the damage can be irreparable.

The cost-effective answer

The good news is that a solution is simple and doesn’t have to cost you the earth. Sunglasses are the perfect way to protect your eyes from harmful rays, but you must ensure you buy sunglasses with a UV protection level of over 97% in order to get the protection your eyes need.

Cheap alternatives are bad news

Many cheap clothing retailers will sell sunglasses from as little as $5, but they do NOT provide UV protection. They are simply a fashion accessory and will not protect your eyes. Instead, opt for a pair of shades that bear the UVA and UVB protection seal of approval.
You don’t need to spend the earth on sunglasses, but when it comes to your health – in this case – spending an extra $20 or so is undeniably worth it.
