Though it seems like common sense, the yoga mat is the single most important accessory to own. It is not enough, however, to just go to a superstore and purchase the first one you see. There are several things to consider when purchasing a mat, including portability, comfort, and steadiness.
Some mats are as thin as 1/16″. These mats provide little comfort, but are easily portable and allow you to hold steady poses. Thicker mats, getting up to 1/4″ thick, provide more comfort, but they take up more space in storage and make it more difficult to maintain difficult poses, as you aren’t really grounded to the floor. When choosing the thickness of your mat, there will always be a trade-off.
Some other things to consider when purchasing a yoga mat are texture, material, and stickiness. The texture and stickiness of your mat will decide if your mat slides around or not. A rougher texture will ensure you don’t slide around, but it may agitate your skin. The stickiness of your mat may allow you to go for a softer texture while still not sliding around. A sticky mat will usually hold its ground, and if you start sliding on it, it just needs to be washed.
